Book 5, The Shack, William Young

The Shack, by William Young
What a read, this book really knows how to get a hold of you from the beginning and pulls you right along all the way to the end. Before I began reading the book, I was told to read it from cover to cover. Not to stop and think about what I was reading. I was told there were parts that will get to me, and parts that I might not fully agree with. What ever the case I was instructed to read from cover to cover. Once I was done then I can think about what I read. I have to say that was good advice. I did enjoy reading the book, and it did get to me and I disagreed with the way some of the points were presented.
Being a father to a three year old little girl, the emotions did run ramped and I did get mad at the author, as would most parents.
Fundamentally the book had some very interesting spiritual views and thoughts. I did agree with most of the concepts that were presented. I agree that Church is not God's primary focus, however the way it was presented was not very clear and I think that several people would read this and take it literally and even take it as far as walking away from the church. This is bad and dangerous. I do not think that enough time was spent on talking about this part of the book. I feel that Church exists because individual worship is not their. God wants humans to be focused on God and worship God alone. As humans we do not worship and give God the glory. That is why Church exists, to worship and give glory to God. Which takes me to Missions, I feel Missions exists because the church is not completing her task. Missions is a broad field, however the main purpose is to bring people to God. I will write more about this in another blog. My point for here is if Humans did what we were designed to do, we would not require church, and I think that is what the author was trying to say.
Over all it is a good story, some parts did go long, but a good read. It is a great book to read and discuss.

Book 1, Blue Like Jazz, Donald Miller

The first book for me to log is Blue Like Jazz, I read it over the summer. I really enjoyed the way Donald Miller writes. However this book was not for me. Though I thought. I have found that since I read it I have had several discussions about different parts of the book with others. Funny, why would I discuss a book that I didn't really enjoy. OK so it must have been for me. I do feel that there were several little parts of the book that really stood out. Parts that just didn't go away from me. OK three parts. 1. living in community, I live in community most of the time when I am in Honduras, I do not feel that living in community is as hard as he makes it out to be. He does seem to be a little self centered and that could be an opportunity wile living among others. Everyone is part of a family and though everyone is different, we all have to get together and try to relate and bend a little to make life a little easier for others.

I also enjoyed the booth that he talked about, the confession booth. However the twist was to get people to come into the confession booth to hear the confession of the christian sitting in the booth not the visitor. How cool is that. Not to mention thinking out of the box. How often do you hear a christian apologizing to others for the actions they are living...or not living while they call themselves Christians. Maybe they really aren't christians after all.

The third part that really stood out and made me a little uncomfortable was his talking about being in solitary confinement for 15 years, not being able to talk to another soul. I do not think that humans are wired to go so long without the relationship of another, we are wired to communicate. 15 years, that makes me feel like I am suffocating. I guess that is my vice, I am afraid of being alone, I walk with God, I talk to God, and I love being with God, however I need to have the companion of others to walk with me and talk with me. I enjoy self reflection and being by myself for a little while. After a day or two, I need the conversation from another. Even if the other person is not speaking, just having someone there with me by my side is enough. Silence amongst people is a good thing. Enjoying being around others is a great thing. I already knew that I desired to be around people, but his chapter made me feel and understand it that much better.

God Bless

Why create the Java Papa Reading List

This blog is really for me to hold myself accountable. I have been reading for some time now, but I have not been logging my thoughts to the books I am reading, as well as I have not been keeping a log of the books that I have read. So this is what this is, it is my personal diary of the books I am reading. As well as my thoughts and the books that I plan to read in the future. I have a desire to write, however when I start writing I generally go blank, this should be interesting to see if I keep this going, and to see how my writing develops as I continue to read.

My goal is to have at least 50 reviews added to this blog within the next year and a half.

So if you are reading this and you have a favorite, let me know, I may like it as well.
